Where is modern civilization heading?

As a society are we heading in the same direction as the ancient Romans? If so the question becomes.......

Are our leaders fiddling while civilization burns?

While we ponder the question I will post my personal thoughts on this blog. Often I will focus on current events that catch my interest, however I am not and do not pretend to be a news organization. I'm simply a guy with his own thoughts on issues that I believe affect our country and society.

Be forewarned, I have been accused of being a right wing thinker and if that is offensive please move on. Remember, this is my blog and my opinions, and unlike many facets of our already over-governed modern society they are not being forced on anyone.

However, please feel free to leave your comments, good, bad or indifferent, after all this is a free society we live in (at least for now).

A new low even in today's world

While America is reeling from the Newtown shooting tragedy of late last week and decent people are still attempting to come to terms with the horror that took place, there are already individuals finding ways to profit from the loss of life. The unfortunate truth is that most of us have come to the realization that regardless of the magnitude of a tragedy there will always be some lowlife that will see an opportunity in it to better their own lot in life, despite what impact their actions may have on the victims or the survivors.

Sadly the Newtown slayings are no exception to the rule, already the opportunists are surfacing in ways that even the most cynical could not have imagined. However, there is one group who have crossed all lines of common decency and morality by using the tragedy as a fund raising opportunity to further their own cause. This group is one that few amongst us would ever imagine being capable of such action. None the less, this unimaginable loss has shown their true colors, frankly it is beyond disgusting. So who is this group and how are they taking financial advantage of this horrific tragedy?

The group I refer to is none other than the Obama administration itself! Finding this hard to believe? So did I but read on.

In an email to supporters, David Axelrod (President Obama's chief campaign advisor) urges recipients to watch President Obama's moving address to the community of Newtown, Connecticut. Contained in the email are two links that open a page with a video featuring the president's speech and two donation buttons asking for $15-$1,000 for his campaign. Maybe we could give Obama and his team the benefit of doubt by imagining this was simply an oversight or just plain incompetence, like many of the other stupid mistakes his administration have made in the past. However, the fund raising potential of this tragedy seems to have been thought thru by his team as evidenced by the two links to the donation and video page placed strategically above and below a picture of Obama giving his speech. One of the links reads, "Watch this speech", the other "my.barackobama.com/Newton". Clicking on the picture directs supporters to the video and donation page. Doesn't leave much doubt about their intentions does it?

You can read a more in depth article about this disgusting exploitation of a national tragedy here:
Team Obama raising money off Sandy Hook tragedy

It will be interesting to see if the traditional media picks up on this or if they simply give Mr Obama another pass. Who knows maybe this particular action will be even too disgusting for them to simply ignore, one can only hope.

On a last note, before anyone accuses me of bad taste or exploitation in blogging about this, trust me I did some soul searching before writing this and realized that the bigger injustice would be to say nothing. After all, in times of crisis people look to their leaders for guidance, it is a sobering thought to realize that their leader and his team view a horrific event as just another opportunity to further their own agenda. Or in the words of  Rahm Emanuel (Obama's former White House Chief of Staff),
"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste"
